La Provence is located south-east of France, stretching from the left
bank of the Rhone (east shore) to the right bank of the Var where it
borders the former county of Nice located on the left bank.
More broadly, in a sense of culture and tourism, Provence extends to
the east of the Gard (beyond Rhone to Nîmes) to the southern Ardeche
and Drome.
In the Middle Ages, Provence was more extensive,
it encompassed including Southern Alps and the country Nice. The
historical divisions have posted a portion of the Alps (covered in the
province of Dauphine) and the country Nice (attached to the States of
Savoy in 1388, in which he eventually form the county of Nice). Since
the second half of the twentieth century, the creation of the
administrative region Provence-Alpes-Cote d'Azur has restored more or
less the original space of the great medieval Provence, with the
Hautes-Alpes and the country Nice.
