Camargue

It is a ground space of 145,300 ha in the south of France, situated geographically between the two main arm of the Rhone delta and the Mediterranean Sea. It can be spread to the East to the plain of the Crau, west to Aigues-Mortes and north to Beaucaire. It extends the departments of Bouches-du-Rhone and Gard.

There are, and 3 parts:

* Petite Camargue to the west of Petit-Rhone,
* Great Camargue, between the two arms of the Rhone,
* Plan du Bourg, east of Grand-Rhone.

In its center lies the pond Vaccarès, the area along the Sea is surrounded by salt ponds.

The Camargue is located mainly in the territory of Commons Arles, which is therefore the largest municipality of metropolitan France, Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer and Salin-de-Giraud.

This region is composed of two parts: the north with farmland and the south made up of marshes and saltwater plans which form a particular ecosystem.

This ecosystem provides a vegetation mainly composed of salicornes and plants halophiles (ie plants that bear salt water) as the saladelle.

It is also an area of breeding horses and bulls, rice cultivation and exploitation of salt (saltmarsh).

The fauna and flora have led to the creation of a national nature reserve on 13 117 hectares (1927) and a regional park on 30 000 hectares (1970).
The annual evaporation is more important than the contribution rain, the river makes the difference thus avoiding the region to be burned by the salt.
