Arles

Arles is the place where the Rhone delta and is the gateway to the Camargue. It is called the capital camarguaise.
The town of Arles is the largest of all municipalities in France. Its territory comprises three outstanding natural areas: north Alpilles, the Camargue in the south which it has most of the area (with the Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer, second largest town in France half extended qu'Arles) and east Crau with Saint-Martin-de-Crau.
Besides the city itself north of the territory, the town of Arles includes many remote villages and hamlets, including Albaron, Gimeaux, Mas-Thibert cast Raphèle-lès-Arles Saliers and Salin-de-Giraud.
While undergoing many urban plans, from antiquity to modern times, the center of the city, geographically fixed at the end of the twelfth century, has preserved a rich heritage which is one of the tourist most popular in Provence. The suburbs of the city over recent except for Trinquetaille reflect developments undertaken in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries and social transformation of the city.

A dozen monuments are inscribed on the list compiled in 1840 by Prosper Mérimée. A large part of the monuments are protected from the first half of the twentieth century. In the territory of Arles there are 44 historical buildings and 48 monuments included in the inventory on 1 January 2006. The vast majority of these buildings is located in the center historique129. The Roman and Romanesque monuments of Arles on the list of world heritage site since 1981. Since autumn 2006, the whole center of the ancient city of Arles, which is inscribed on the prestigious list of world heritage site by Unesco established. The label Arles, Roman and Romanesque monuments is now the exact wording of the Heritage Arles.
Of archaeological excavations conducted submarine in the Rhone in 2007 led to the discovery of major Roman sculptures, including a realistic marble bust of Julius Caesar and Neptune 1.80 meters from the third century, new evidence of the rich past the ancient city.
